Write a concise, 3-4 page (double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman font) semiotic analysis of an image (e.g., print advertisement, Instagram post, magazine cover, movie poster, etc). Describing the denotative and connotative meanings within the image, analyze what this image communicates about culture. Who created the image and who or what is represented in (or excluded from) it? What does the image “say” about the cultural identities or artifacts that it represents or excludes? What spoken and unspoken messages does it convey about social values, social positions, and/or power in society?
In your analysis, apply (and mark in bold) three or more of these concepts from the course—values, stereotypes, power, gender, race, ethnicity, class, context, ethnocentrism, resistance, history, identity, physical appearance, material culture, social positions, cultural text, cultural space, or another concept from the course not listed here—to the chosen example in a manner that is relevant, thoughtful, and demonstrates your knowledge of the concept. Append the image at the end of your paper (this will not count toward the 3-4 page requirement)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not:
- Analyze an image of the Kardashians (I’ve read too many of these) or of cologne or perfume (which has been assigned in other MJF courses in the past)
- Recycle a semiotic analysis essay from another class.
