Many businesses assume that their operations are totally integrated across functional lines …or are they? We may have organizational environments where:
- Downstream processes such as production lines respond to upstream orders via email from the Sales department to create products for a customer where Accounting and Finance sends an invoice.
- We also have manual processes where a production manager sends an email to the Human Resources Department requesting to hire a new employee.
- Marketing may also decide on a new advertising campaign and include a copy of the brochure in all employees’ pay envelopes at the end of the month.
Although such companies are not obsolete how will such companies need to change their business models in the 21st century? What are some of the driving technological or perhaps societal forces behind this change?
