I will post below the name of the museum you can choose from 1) Art institute of chicago ( non- western work). 2) Field Museum. 3) Dusable Muesum of African American History. 4) National Museum of Mexican Art. Please select a non western artwork in the choices above from one of these museums.
Also, keep in my mind that you have to write this as you have seen the art piece within this week.
Grading Rubric: Allow one substantial paragraph for each point below. 125 points.
1) Catalog, 5 pts. Give the name of the museum or , title of artwork, artist, artwork date, gallery or venue, and date of your visit/attendance.
2) Description, 15 pts. What is the Non-Western Culture and Time period? What is the genre or style? Contextualize — give background research and make sure to cite!
For Museum: What does the artwork look like?
3) Theme, 10 pts. What is the theme (storyline or narrative)?
How does it relate to the culture? To their religion, if applicable? Give examples.
4) Analysis, 30 pts. See Introduction chapter and Arts Analysis Methodology handout.
Discuss treatment of subject matter and elements of design. How and why are these choices of design elements and treatments important?
For Museum: Indicate materials, colors, line, space, figures, gestures, subject matter, texture, perspective, movement, etc.
5) Interpretation and Evaluation, 20 pts. What is the mood or emotion evoked?
What do you think the artist is trying to say (ie, why did s/he create this)?
Did this artwork/performance draw you in, cause you to think, remind you of anything, or move you emotionally in any way? Explain how or in what ways. Part of an aesthetic analysis is the work’s relationship to the viewer/participant (you!).
6) Cultural Merit, 20 pts. What makes this culture and artwork/performance unique?
What cultural values are evident, & how are these expressed? Give specific examples.
Show why the artwork or performance has merit – assess strengths and weaknesses.
