SECTION I:

This section of the exam will ask you to discuss the significance of paired identification terms.  Below  includes the list of possible paired terms.  On the day of the exam you will see five pairs from the following list picked by the instructor.  You will be then be required to select three of the five pairs.

For each pair, you will write roughly one to two paragraphs to describe the relationship between the two terms.  You will want to briefly identify each term by providing a basic definition of each term.  You will always want to include an analytical description of the relationship between the two terms.   Additionally, you will want to describe the significance of this relationship in the larger context of the course.

SECTION II:

 Make sure to use evidence from your reading materials and/or information from lecture in each response.  Make sure to address each part of each question completely.  Answers with simple generalizations or that neglect a part of the question will be evaluated as incomplete.   You should aim to write roughly three paragraphs per response.  On the day of the exam you will respond to TWO out of three questions from the following: 

QUESTIONS

 

  1. Why was the term “gilded” an accurate description for the last quarter of the 19th century?
  2. In what political realm did women participate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?  What were their objectives and what was accomplished?
  3. What do you think were the most significant cultural shifts of the 1920s and why?
  4. Class conflict is arguably the basis for the rise of the labor movement.  How did the Populist’s demands reflect these tensions?
  5. How successful were the Progressive Era movements?  In what ways was Progressivism actually “progressive”?  From a modern perspective, in what ways was the movement prejudiced?
  6. What event contributed to the growing power of the United States as a global power?  Make sure to include at least three specific examples.
