we discuss workplace laws and policies to ensure that employees are not subjected to discrimination or harassment in the workplace, nor retaliation when reporting unethical activity. Although there are many laws that prevent harassment based on one’s gender, we find that sexual harassment is still prevalent in many public organizations. In this week’s reading assignment, we look at media articles concerning two very different work places and groups of professionals to understand the impacts to employees and how harassment and dehumanizing behavior can be “normalized” in government agencies. As stated in the letter signed by 150+ female legislators, staffers and lobbyists working in our State Capitol, “no matter a woman’s age, weight, religion, sexual orientation, race, social status, or position of power, she is not insulated from this behavior, it is pervasive.”
please provide responses to the following questions in a minimum of a one-page, single spaced paper:
1. What statutes (laws) protect employees from sexual harassment and retaliation in the workplace?
2) What common themes did you identify in the workplace cultures of these two divergent public agencies that allowed sexual harassment and dehumanizing behavior to be normalized, even though this behavior is unlawful? Please provide examples to substantiate your responses.
3) What are the personal and professional impacts to targets of sexual harassment and other types of dehumanizing behavior?
4) What can other public agencies learn from these examples to ensure that women are not subjected to harassment?
