Write three to four pages (double-spaced 12pt font) setting up a possible research question in an area of sociological interest for you, covering some of the most important studies that have been done in that area. Cite at least 10 peer-reviewed journal articles in addition to whatever other scholarly books or reports you include; there is no upper limit. At least five journal articles must explicitly be from journals in the discipline of sociology, the rest can be from journals in other disciplines or interdisciplinary journals.
Be sure you do not simply summarize each article. It should not read like an annotated bibliography. Instead, allow the articles to speak to each other. You are going for synthesis in addition to a summary. Look at the literature reviews in journal articles for examples of this type of dialogue with the literature.
I encourage you to choose a topic you plan to do future research on or would like to develop as a writing sample for graduate school applications.
