Scientific Method Lab

In this lab you will be going through all of the parts of designing an experiment that studies how a factor of your choice influences human heart rate. This lab will have you identifying all of the parts of a scientific study and evaluating your experiment design:

Title of Your Experiment:

Background: (Use your knowledge about human heart rate to explain why you have come up with the hypothesis you have in your experiment. While your hypothesis may indeed be false, funding for research is limited and they want to make sure you have a good ideas what you are doing before giving funds for you to begin your study).

Hypothesis:

Equipment needed:

Procedure: (In this section you want to give very specific directions for allowing another group to repeat your study and get the same exact results).

Datą: (When ever possible, it is easiest to organize your data into tables).

Calculations: (Show formulas and any steps taken to do any necessary calculations with your data.)

Results: (Verbally state what the data and calculations show. Does this support or reject the hypothesis?)

Discussion: (This is where you discuss what your results mean to the world. What questions does it answer? What questions does it raise? Should you modify your procedure and retest? How could you make this experiment better? What were sources of error in your experiment? Any other concerns or observations from your experiment?)

Questions:

  1. What was the dependent variable?
  1. What was the independent variable?
  1. What was the control group?
  1. What was the experimental group?
