Your assignment is due Saturday, May 15th at 11:59pm. You will submit this assignment here on iLearn. This assignment is worth 3% of your grade, so make sure you allocate enough time to do a good job and get full credit. Instructions and advice for completing this assignment are listed below. You will be selecting a movie that attempts to portray scientific ideas from at least a somewhat accurate point. This movie does not have to be well known (aka B sci-fi movies are okay and welcome for this assignment). The key to choosing a good movie is finding one that portrays at least five distinct and accurate scientific ideas. Many movies demonstrate false science, but finding ones that show accurate science are often harder to come by. Additionally, the scientifically accurate statements must be significant. For example, it is scientifically accurate that most humans have two arms, two legs, and walk on land; however, that does not count as a significant scientifically accurate statement. It may help to identify movies that have a scientist in the lead role, but that is not a requirement for this assignment, and even movies with leading scientists do not always make significant attempts to be scientifically accurate. Think The Martian (great movie for this assignment!) versus Star Wars (no attempt made to be scientific and not acceptable for this project). Once you have identified your movie your assignment is to come up with five accurate scientific ideas portrayed in the movie and five inaccurate ones. You will then compose a blog that describes these elements. You do not have to write in paragraph form, and writing each correct/incorrect idea as a numbered item may be helpful. You do need to write in complete sentences and each number/bullet point should explain what the movie got correct or incorrect and WHY. This means that a single sentence will likely not be enough to sufficiently describe each idea but do not overdo it! 3-5 sentences per idea should be enough. A brief summary of the movie should also be included at the beginning of your blog. |
