“Having gone through the course and covered a wide range of feminist thought and modes of feminist action, this assignment attends to your future within feminism. In this final paper you will lead with a proposal that answers the question: what will you do with all this theory?
The answer to this question (“what will you do with all this theory?”) can take many forms: propose a specific intervention into issues impacting your community; craft a manifesto; propose an artistic intervention. Whatever your proposal, you should back it up with 2-3 references from the thinkers that we’ve encountered(from the course reading attached). How do you envision accomplishing that? To and For Whom is this commitment addressed? When and Where should, can, will this take place? Each of these implicate a why.
Your assignment will be structured into two parts: a proposal, and a justification. Your proposal will describe what you intend to do. Your artist statement/activist statement/justification will draw upon the work of 2-3 thinkers we have encountered this semester. In your justification, you should frame your intervention in your own voice and according to your own interests. That is, don’t simply restate the readings, but use them to motivate your own feminist thought and action. Your intervention should be oriented around a central claim or position that you justify using the thinkers we’ve read in class. Additionally, your intervention should be as specific as possible (e.g., while “end violence against women” is a laudible goal, what specific strategies will your intervention employ to move towards this goal).
Examples of proposals: a community newsletter; a protest; a piece of community art; a way of addressing issues particular to The New School, etc.
Finally, consider the limitations, drawbacks or dilemmas that may occasion your intervention.
Your proposal should be approximately 500 words. The statement/justification should be approximately 1000 words, double spaced.
