SCF Comfort Care Is a Vital Part of Medical Care for Dying Patients Discussion

Advance directives (AD) attempt to make clear what your wishes are when you are at the end of life (EOL) and not able to speak for yourself. Most students have completed AD on their own or in another course. For this assignment, talk to a peer about legal ethical issues related to caring for patients who are actively dying. Once you have discussed the various legal ethical issues with your peer write a paper reflecting on your discussion with your peer.  The paper should be 2-3 pages in length. (Meets course objectives 1 a, b, c & 2 a, b, c, d)

Specifically, ask a nursing colleague for a few minutes of her time to complete a class assignment on caring for patients at the end of life. Meet with this person and talk about your experiences caring for dying patients. What were both of your experiences? What were your concerns – clinically, legally, ethically?  Once you have had this conversation, reflect on it and write the paper. Start by describing how the conversation started (e.g. I meet with a nurse from work on our lunch break. We sat in the cafeteria and I asked her about what comes to her mind when she thinks about caring for patients who are dying….).  Then, identify one of the key issues you discussed about these patients and explain the legal and ethical implications. For example, you may have discussed pain management, or family issues/conflict, or non-existent advance directives, or spiritual issues, etc – what are the consequences of this concern? What are the legal ramifications related to this issue? What are some ethical concerns related to this same issue? This section should be supported with scholarly sources. The rest of the paper is just about your experience – what is your biggest concern about patients who do not have advance directives? Once you have identified this concern – research the issue to identify ways you can be better prepared to address it, should it arise. This section should also have scholarly support.

Follow the rubric – use the section headers in your paper to help focus the reader on each section. Do NOT use the questions posed on the rubric as the headers – just a word or two that summarizes that section.
