Santa Monica College Renaissance Inspired Self Portrait Essay

Fashion a Renaissance “Selfie” starring yourself! This assignment asks you to create (or recreate) a Northern Renaissance inspired self portrait. This is your opportunity to travel back in time and recreate yourself in the guise of a renaissanc era person. (I uploaded my selfie please use that to write this paper)

Each student will write a 5-7 page (double spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman font) response paper to accompany their Selfie that explains the formal and iconographic choices that were a part of the artistic process. Tell us who you are and how your desired social identity is communicated through the image you have created. This is not a traditional research paper, but it does require research! You must cite at least four peer-reviewed academic publications in support of the choices that you have made in your self-portrait. (I uploaded four peer-reviewed sources that you should use for this paper)These four sources must be found independently—you are welcome to cite sources assigned for this class, but they will not count towards your four supporting sources (that’s why this is called a research project…you must do some research!).

So, for example, if you are presenting yourself in the guise of a Burgundian duke, then you need to research how these rulers were represented in visual art and why artists highlighted certain qualities over others. If you show yourself next to a clock, why? What was the symbolic importance of this motif for northern renaissance audiences? Are you a nun? A wealthy merchant? A struggling artist? Be creative while thinking carefully about the historical context of the era. Choices in bodily gesture, facial expression, dress, hairstyle, accompanying objects, and setting all have specific meaning.

You must cite your sources within the text using footnotes and provide a bibliography (not counted toward the 5 page minimum)

CITE YOUR WORK PROPERLY! Citations MUST be in Chicago Style.
