Exploring the influence of Buddhism on spiritual and material culture, and body art in early modern Japan
Cover the following things:
1) What is the topic?
2) How is it relevant to the subject of “the Buddhist body” / “the body in Buddhism”?
3) Which materials are you going to use to explore this topic?
4) How are you going to use / analyse these materials?
5) What conclusions (if any, at this point) do you reach on this topic?
Use 3-4 primary sources. These can include sutras (we have discussed Vimalakirti, The Heart Sutra, and The Lotus Sutra, as well as quotations from various others (on the Powerpoints) in class. They can also include literary texts you’ve found yourself, or visual materials such as paintings.
Use theories, historical knowledge, knowledge of society (that you have learned from class and from secondary research materials you have found on e.g. JSTOR) to explore and analyze the primary materials.
