HIGH RENAISSANCE AND MANNERISM
As you have learned this week, Mannerism is the name given to a style of art that flourished in Europe between the years 1520 and 1600, after the High Renaissance and before the Baroque. However, not every artist working during this time is regarded a Mannerist, and some experts even disagree as to whether Mannerism should be considered a separate movement from the High Renaissance or a stylistic phase of the High Renaissance. Because there are considerable differences between the High Renaissance and the Mannerism styles, in this class, we are considering Mannerism to be a different art movement.
Write a short essay (2 pages) about topics/styles discussed during week 2 and 3 – High Renaissance and Mannerism. Try to explore and explain some of the main characteristics of the two, their similarities and differences, and provide at least 1-2 artworks discussed within each topic/style to support your ideas and claims, i.e. at least 2 – 4 artwork examples all together.
