Please choose one of the following and submit a written assignment which covers the questions raised:
1) Research on the impacts of the Earned Income Tax Credit: please review Nichols and Rothstein (2015) and Manoli and Turner (2018), and write an analytical summary on the economic impacts of EITC.
Specifically, answer the following questions: What do we know theoretically about the impact of the EITC program on labor supply? Provide your insight from the material covered in the course. Then, provide a summary of the empirical research on the impacts of EITC by reviewing Nichols and Rothstein (2015), including any potential recommendations for program reform. Then, review Manoli and Turner (2018) and summarize whether or not EITC only has impacts on labor supply – could it have potential impacts on other types of outcomes for individuals?
OR
2) Research on the impacts of access to Disability Insurance (DI): please review French and Song (2014) and Kostol and Mogstad (2014) and write an analytical summary on the impacts of having access to Disability Insurance.
Specifically, answer the following questions: First, using insight from the material covered in class, explain any theoretical indirect effects that could occur from people having access to DI. Then, summarize French and Song (2014) and explain how they empirically test for the causal impact of DI receipt on labor supply – i.e., explain their methodology and the results that they find. Next, summarize Kostol and Mogstad (2014) and explain their research question (what are they specifically testing for) and summarize their results. Do the authors provide any policy recommendations?
