San Francisco State University Urban American Street Gang Questions

I’m working on a economics discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

1) What are some of the organizational problems faced by the Black Kings as they made the transition from classic street gang to drug selling gang?

2) How does “Greed is Good” capitalism come into conflict with the preference of the older Black Kings? For this question, you should also think about how compensation is determined in this gang, which was also described in “An economic analysis of a drug selling gang’s finances.”

3) Describe the role of incarceration in the evolution of the Black Kings from a family to a business. For this question, think about some of the defining features of the Maquis Park economy

4) Using the terminology of Olson (groups provide a benefit), why did gangs become heavily involved in drug markets in less dense cities – like Chicago and Los Angeles – but only loosely in older, denser places like New York and DC?

5) What are the costs and benefits of keeping a formal book system like the one maintained by the Black Kings? Is there any evidence that the Black Kings tried to mitigate some of these costs?
