San Diego State University Media and Popular Culture Mediated Text Summary Essay

Analyze a specific mediated text.

First, choose a mediated text to analyze. This could be a music video, tv show, or movie (must be produced after 2018). Do not choose “This Is America” or The Joker. Additionally, please do not choose an artifact that bloggers on the internet have already overanalyzed.

  • If you choose a music video, don’t just focus on the song lyrics. Also, don’t just focus on the visuals. Should focus on BOTH.

Then, write a 3-4 Full Page essay Excluding the Title and Reference Pages, by answering the questions:

  1. Provide a brief description of the mediated text.
  2. Analyze your text by providing a dominant, negotiated, and oppositional reading. When analyzing you should include:
    • What is the intended message? How did the producers intend for the text to be read?
    • What ideologies or messages are being represented in the text?
    • What ideologies or messages are not being represented in the text?
    • Refer to specific example(s) from the mediated text
    • What is an alternative interpretation of the text?
  3. What is your reading of the text? Is it more dominant, negotiated, or oppositional? Explain why.
