Students response:

Popular media did not reflect, but shaped gender roles in the 1940s and 1950s. Media may not have completely pulled women from the workforce as that remained strong for the necessity of family income, but it did give the American ideal family and led to the baby boom. “During the 1950s, men and women married younger, divorced less than in the past, and had more children. A baby boom that lasted into the 1960s followed the end of the war”.(Foner, GML, 741). By offering the ideal American nuclear family, the media shaped the actions of young Americans to gender roles that fit well for families. Popular media also shaped gender roles through way of housing. Housing in Levittowns was made so families who normally could not afford a house could purchase their own home for their families. Many houses, including the Cape Codder model, came with expandable attics in an effort to allow the house to grow if the family did(Wiese, Post War Suburbia, 3:30). Houses and communities like these allowed the media to shape gender roles because it gave the average American family the stability to follow the media’s idea of the perfect family. Now more financially stable, the women would no longer need to work and could stay home and care for children.

  • Compose a thoughtful and respectful response to ONE of the discussion threads created by other students. (I recommend you do this in a word processing program and then cut and paste your answer into the discussion forum).
  • Begin your response with a clear thesis statement that responds directly the post AND to the original question, AND establishes a plausible line of argument to support this claim. (your response must do all three things to earn full credit) (1pt)
  • Next, develop at least ONE concrete example to support your argument, drawing from the assigned course materials. This must be a different example than the ones you cited in your own discussion post. (1pt)
  • Please cite each of your sources using a simple parenthetical citation form, including author’s last name, abbreviated title, and page. E.g.: (Davidson and Lytle, ‘View from the Bottom Rail,’ 275), or (D&L, ‘VftBR,’ 275).
  • Responses must be at least 100 words in length. Please use full sentences. (1pt for format criteria – see Grading Rubric and Abbreviations)
