– How many different countries produced food items at the site?
The most amount of produce is from the United States and second most is from Mexico. However, their were more exotic produce like Keowee, pomegranate from Chile and only ginger from Peru and Pineapple from Costa Rica. Globalization has made it possible to people to have access to verity of produce.
– What’s more expensive, generally? The food items produced locally or the food items produced far away?
Produce was cheaper from Mexico compared to the produce from USA, for example 2 cucumbers were for one dollar from Mexico but USA cucumbers were 2 for five dollars (but the quality of the USA cucumbers were fresher) However food from further away from the United States was more expensive for example ginger was $3.49 per pound from Peru and Pomegranate from Chile for $5.00 but same produce were not available from USA. Price will prevent many people from enjoying some of these more expensive goods.
– Are foods imported from other countries more likely to be fresh or packaged?
Quite a bit of food imported Mexico is fresh but only couple of items of fresh food is imported from Peru and Chile.
– What country provides the most food for the site?
United States provides most of the food for Ralphs Grocery Store near me.
– What other things can you learn about the globalization of food by observing the site?
Then, for your discussion, you will post two paragraphs (5 sentences minimum each).
Paragraph 1: Describe your observation. What did you learn? What data did you gather? Where did you go?
I visited the Ralphs Grocery store near my apartment. I asked the produce worker how I can find out where the food comes from, he was kind enough to direct me to labels that were on the produce indicating country or production. I went around to all the fruit/vegetables and wrote down the price and origin of the produce. I never paid attention to all the labels on the fruit and vegetable that tell you where the food is from. I learned fresh food is imported from not only Mexico but from other places like Peru and Chile but I was surprised to see that not many foreign vendors sold produce to Ralphs, which I would think has do with the high cost to export produce.
Paragraph 2: Answer this question using information from this unit and from your observation activity. What does it mean to eat local? Make an argument for or against eating local.
