Saint Leo University Professional Manuscript Paper

For the Professional Publication Manuscript, you will be synthesizing the information that you have gathered throughout the course and composing a literature review manuscript that could potentially be published. That is, you are not presenting a full research paper, someone else’s data, or a research plan–but rather providing an in-depth review of the available literature surrounding the topic that you selected.

You must follow the submission guidelines for the journal that you chose (i.e., a minimum of 2,500 words, style, number, and type of references, etc.). DO NOT submit the manuscript for publication unless directed to do so upon receiving the course instructor’s feedback. You may use your previous article- and dissertation reviews as a foundation for your professional publication manuscript.  Your literature review manuscript, however, must be original and re-worded as necessary to avoid self-plagiarism.

A literature review should be a well-written piece of discursive prose (proceeding by argument or theme rather than author). In your literature review manuscript, synthesize and evaluate relevant literature according to your research topic and questions. As an analogy- in your article and dissertation reviews, you analyzed individual trees; in your literature review manuscript, you will need to illustrate the forest.

*Tips

Utilize headings effectively

Lead the reader to see what prior research documents, where the gaps are, and why your proposal next week is the next logical step (attachment #1 shows how your proposal is built upon your literature review).

Do not organize your arguments by the author (see attachment #2)

Your literature review should not be a list describing or summarizing one piece of literature after another. A literature review should be organized into sections that present themes or identified trends.

Avoid using direct quotations

Direct quotations (DQ) are useful and necessary when you want to cite the source as is. For example, you are likely to see many DQs in the findings section of a qualitative study wherein authors share verbatim evidence of the themes that emerged from analyses. DQ is also necessary when paraphrasing is likely to change the substantive meaning of the source. However, using DQs in your literature review weakens your arguments and distracts the reader. Try to incorporate the source into your text. You rarely get to see DQs in articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

*After you draft your literature review manuscript, follow the steps below;

Checking for plagiarism and self-plagiarism (Required)
Submit a DRAFT of your Professional Publication Manuscript assignment to check the originality of your work before submitting your final assignment. Your assignment will be checked via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Getting feedback from the instructor (Recommended): I will provide feedback with an eye toward improvement if you email me your draft by Friday in week 6 (Dec. 3rd). Note that my feedback on your draft focuses on the content and direction of your assignment. It is the student’s responsibility to submit a final paper free of grammar or spelling errors and in the current APA format. While it is not required, I intend to provide as much feedback as possible for improvement before grading your literature review manuscript.

*Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

The journal I selected requires a 35-page manuscript. Do I really need to write a 35-page long manuscript?

You are expected to meet the submission guidelines for the journal you selected. However, if your manuscript is between 10 and 15 pages, that is acceptable for the assignment.

  1. Do you have any examples of literature review manuscripts?

Two example manuscripts written by LU students who agreed to share their work with you are attached for your reference (see attachment #3). Also, refer to the literature review sections of the articles and dissertations from previous weeks. Your manuscript does not need to be as extensive as those in the published articles and dissertations, however, your manuscript should follow a similar format (i.e., organized by the theme or identified trends in the relevant literature to your topic).

How do I turn the draft in to check for plagiarism in Canvas?

When using Canvas, submitted assignments are automatically scanned by Turnitin. You can view the Turnitin report through the normal submission link, then revise and resubmit as needed (Canvas allows for unlimited submissions).

  1. How long does it take for a Turnitin Originality Report to generate?

Originality Reports should usually be ready within 15 minutes. Note that there is a 24-hour waiting period between each submission. This delay allows resubmissions to correctly generate a report without matching a student’s previous draft.

What is the acceptable percentage for Turnitin?

The widely acceptable Turnitin percentage is 15% and below. However, I accept Turnitin scores as high as 45% if the sources are well cited. Remember that we all are bound to the LU Online Student Honor Code. It indicates that no amount of plagiarism is appropriate. https://www.liberty.edu/students/honor-code-luo/
