Rutgers University Newark Leadership Theory and Practice Discussion

1. Leadership Log

Assignment 1: After reading about the company Pixar in case 7.3 in the LMX Chapter, in your Leadership Log Entry, answer questions 1b and 1c, question 2, and question 3a. Only a paragraph is required for each response.

Assignment 2: Drawing on the principles of LMX Theory, think about a situation in which you were a leader or a follower (or both!) – this could be in a class, a team sport, at work, or other volunteer experience. In your Leadership Log Entry, briefly describe the situation, and then use the following prompts to reflect on the situation: Were there in-groups and out-groups that you observed? Were you aware of it at the time? How did this affect you professionally and/or personally? Have you created in-groups and out-groups yourself? How did it affect people’s actions or performance?

Please share with the class your experiences as a leader or member in a context with in-groups and out-groups. Here are some possible questions to address, but you should talk about whatever you think is relevant. Were there in-groups and out-groups? Why or why not? Were you aware of it at the time? How did it affect you professionally and/or personally? Have you created in-groups and out-groups yourself? How did it affect people’s performance?

Your individual post is due Saturday night, 2/22/20, and all follow-up responses to your classmates are due by Tuesday night, 2/25/20. To reiterate from previous Class Discussion instructions:

This exercise is about engaging in collaborative dialogue with your class colleagues while you consider the questions and apply the principles you have learned from the readings. In addition to offering your own thoughtful reflection, you are expected to reflect on others’ commentary. You can do this by:

  • Communicating understanding or support for others’ perspectives;
    • Noting take-aways that may have expanded your own views about the case;
    • Building upon points your teammates have made;
    • Respectfully and constructively providing counterpoints to perspectives that have been shared;
    • Emphasizing your own or others’ points with your individual professional experiences.
