Role-play to learn how to communicate with a child.
Scenario: A father comes into the office with Kara, his 6-year-old daughter. He says she has been pulling her left ear and complaining of pain. She appears bashful, is clinging to her father, and is crying softly. Role-play the communication between the administrative medical assistant, father, and child as you prepare her to be taken to the treatment room for the examination.
Instructions: 1. Position yourself at the child’s eye level.
2. Talk at a level the child understands.
3. Speak with a soft, low-pitched voice, consoling the child.
4. Ask simple questions making sure they are understood.
5. Allow the child to be involved.
6. Offer a toy or prop to gain attention and cooperation.
7. Allow the child to express fear and cry.
8. Recognize that the child may be stressed and accept the child’s behavior, showing sensitivity and empathy.
9. Encourage feedback making sure the message is understood.
