I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

There were many movements for equality during the time leading to the Civil War. Which groups were seeking equality, what were their strategies, and were the groups successful? Why or why not?

The civil war to many is a battle that determined what kind of nation America would be. This war had answered two questions in which people had, those being, whether the United States was to be a dissolvable confederation of sovereign states or an indivisible nation with a sovereign national government; and whether this nation, born of a declaration that all men were created with an equal right to liberty, would continue to exist as the largest slaveholding country in the world. Before the war, slavery was a big thing and the United States was as stated, one of the largest slaveholding countries in the world. While people took great use of slaves during this time there were others who opposed it and formed organizations to try and free the slaves and give them some form of freedom.

One of these movements and organizations was the American Colonization Society (ACS). What the American Colonization Society proposed was to gradually free slaves and move them to another country to establish their own society in a new country. The main country there were being moved to was Africa. The ACS received private funding from congress and from states such as Virginia and Maryland. The other two goals they had were to make sure that the colony had the resources to live such as fertile soil to grow crops. The last goal was to suppress attempts to engage in the Atlantic slave trade. This group wasn’t really looking for equality in a sense, more of freeing slaves and letting them create a life for themselves. For the most part, they succeeded in doing this but they didn’t get to give every slave freedom. Three of the reasons the movement never became very successful were lack of interest by free blacks, opposition by some abolitionists, and the scale and costs of moving many people.

The Civil War was a battle between opposing groups of citizens from the same country. After 4 years, both sides in the fight lost. Many people died on both sides and the South suffered greatly. The war was not expected. It was stated as the worst war in the american history It was the uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over whether the federal government should have the power to prohibit slavery in territories that had not yet become states that led to the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860.First Republican president to run on a platform that committed to ending slavery in the territories. This war had alot of effects amd results. One of the main results was that slavery was abolished by the 13th Amendment, which was associated with President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Additionally, the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution were also passed by Congress and ratified by states. One of the movements that flared and wanted to apply the idea of freeing slaves and enforcing equality was the American Colonization Society. Which was started In 1817 by a minister with the name of Robert Finley. A colony in West Africa where free blacks could live was the goal of the American Colonization Society.their goal was partly successful in which not alot of africans americans agreed to their plans because Since most African Americans living in the United States are separated from their homeland in Africa, this country was considered their home. Also one of the reasons that the movement didn’t completely achieve their plan was Abolitionists’ opposition to relocation and the costs of moving many people are complicating matters.
