Revising to create effective sentences

Revising to create effective sentences. One aspect of technical writing–even more than in other types of writing–is learning strategies to make writing more clear, concise, accurate, specific, precise, and “usable.” Thus, we’ll come back to these exercise more than once this semester. For now, just to get started, look over the exercises on pages 136-138 in TC, and, then, using the advice offered by the book, revise one sentence from exercises 1 – 14.

Post your revision, putting the original version first so it will be easy for us to see what you changed. While often it’s best to write your response without looking at what others have already posted, in this instance I ask you to look to see what others have done and to try to avoid revising a sentence another student has already revised unless you have some great new way of approaching it. Then discuss what your thinking was in making the changes you did and how they reflect what the book advises. Try to post something early in the week to give everyone a chance to look at and respond to others’ responses.

(10 points:  3 for revising the sentence, using advice from TC; 3 for explaining your thinking in making the changes you did and how they reflect the book’s advice; and 4 for responding to one or two other students in an engaged, useful, substantive way.)
