Director of Marketing and Communications
Effective Date: October 1, 2019, or sooner
Consistent with the University of West Alabama’s culture and strategic goals, the director of marketing and communications will be an ambitious and innovative thinker with proven success in brand building and promotion through collaboration, ethical leadership, and customer service. The director of marketing and communications is responsible for developing and implementing annual marketing plans for the University, working with senior leadership, faculty, and staff to enhance UWA’s brand and further its mission as a regional university rich in tradition and committed to service.
Required
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field
• Full-time experience in marketing and/or communications, with relevant experience in a senior leadership position
• Demonstrated success as shown through portfolio in the areas of responsibility aforementioned and also the following:
• Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills and proficiency in communicating and engaging effectively with a wide range of constituencies, including senior management, faculty, board members, staff, alumni, and students;
• Knowledge of trends and best practices in brand management and marketing, as well as communication technologies;
• Management experience in budgeting, research, and customer service;
• Expertise in making presentations and communicating with the media and key stakeholders.
Desirable
• At least 10 years of full-time experience in marketing and/or communications in higher education, with at least five years in a leadership position
• Knowledge of and professional experience in the Black Belt region of Alabama or other rural setting
• Master’s degree in marketing or a related field
• Demonstrated abilities in graphic design and photography, including use of Adobe Creative Suite
Responsibilities
• Create and implement research-based marketing plans for university brand awareness, integrated marketing campaigns, strategic communications, and media strategy;
• Collaborate across campus with departments ranging from Admissions to Advancement and all between to ensure cohesive efforts in marketing;
• Continually conduct market research to ensure effectiveness of advertising campaigns, digital communications, social media, and other external communication strategies;
• Set and implement strategy of website development and content management;
• Oversee available staff, which may include students, in areas of marketing, editorial, design, photography, video, digital and web content;
• Develop and implement creative concepts for University marketing materials for all appropriate channels and platforms;
• Serve as gateway for marketing materials created and intended for University’s external audiences;
• Contribute to University publications through creative outlets;
• Special projects as directed by University leadership; and
• Other duties as assigned.
