Topic 1
Please create your own Time samples. You can choose the attention span or other domain/development (perhaps, this might be useful for your DRDP). Make sure that your time samples fit the domain/development.

Topic 2
Read the section on “Attention.” What did you learn? Now, discuss how will you support children in practicing attention? (Page 199)
“Attention span is not so much centered on classroom management but on the relation to learning” (Nilsen, 2017, pg 206). As we see connections between achievements, learning capabilities and skills, and attention spans we are enabling ourselves as teachers to help by facilitating and guiding children individually through their cognitive development while seeing things from a broad spectrum. “The traditional method of recite, memorize, and test has been unsuccessful for many people” (Nilsen, 2017, pg 206). I will be able to support children in practicing attention, first, by leading with enthusiasm and engaging in what they find interest in the most. If I provide topics the children enjoy with enthusiasm , this creates interest and curiosity for them to be able to spark that interest of motivation to learn. Solving issues that arise during a curriculum so that they receive a pleasing experience is helpful in sustaining their interest and attention as well. “The children will be able to show growing capacity to maintain concentration over time an a task, question, set of direction or interactions, despite distractions and interruptions”(Nilsen, 2017, pg 216). Being a good role model overall makes a whole lot of a difference.
Topic 3: Knowledge, Skills, Beliefs
After reading this chapter, Discuss:
Knowledge: What kind of knowledge have you gained (you can list using bullet points)?
– Cognitive Development, contains stages and with respect to memory and attention span, is affected by physical, emotional, and cultural influences.
-Social interaction plays a role in cognition. “Piaget’s theory emphasizes the biological role in the emergence of cognitive skills, but theorists Lev Vygotsky recognized that the child’s perception, attention, and memory are affected dramatically by social interactions” (Nilsen, 2017, pg. 227).
Skills: What skills you gained and how will you use the skills?
I will be able to demonstrate the process of how and what a Time sample is used for and use this in class. Also, I will be able to differentiate between various cognitive abilities as it relates to attention span and explain Vygotsky’s philosophy of role of the teacher to scaffold learning (Nilsen, 2017, pg. 202).
Beliefs: Why are the knowledge and skills you listed important to understand and recognize attention span and time sample.
– The knowledge and skills that I listed are important to understand and recognize attention span and time sample because they are useful for the growth of children’s development and recording is helpful when children’s choices need to be recorded at a certain time or need to be focused on in aspects of measuring attention span and interests. “The time Sample is an efficient recording method that tracks children’s choices, their playmates, and the time they spend in one area” (Nilsen, 2017, pg. 227). The time that children spend in one area can give information about their experience or interest in that area. The skills and knowledge I know now helped me better understand how these two things can correlate.
