Topic 1
Explain the importance of using a portfolio for communications with families. Be sure to support your explanation with specific textbook materials.
– When showing the child’s family their portfolio, the teacher is able to reveal a snapshot of their child in a classroom setting. “Portfolios give the opportunity for family involvement through communication centered on the child’s work, and they help the family become involved in the curriculum” (Nilsen, 2017, p. 443). When looking through the portfolio, the teachers are able to discuss the child’s development through physical means to show the families a better picture of how their child is progressing in the program. This then helps the families realize what areas the child needs more support in and what can be done at home to help them improve.
Topic 2
Discuss, illustrate and outline, how you are going to prepare for the parent-teacher conference. Be sure specific.
– I will make sure to have all appropriate paperwork on hand such as work samples, DRDP meaning and rating sheet, the child’s developmental progress report, goals and objectives for the child, and two handouts. I will practice greeting the parent and explaining the paperwork that I have collected. I will then end the conference by suggesting activities to help their child and asking if they have any questions. I will make sure to emphasize that I am here to help them if any questions should arise after the conference has ended.
