After examining Gibb’s categories, I believe communication will improve if individuals incorporated supportive behaviors while speaking to others. When communicating with someone, I consider how they are feeling have empathy for them. For example, the text states that “Gibb found that empathy helps rid communication of the equality of indifference. When people show that they care for the feelings of another, there’s little chance that the person’s self-concept will be threatened” (Adler & Proctor II 353). Empathy plays a major role in the supportive behaviors of communication. With supportive behaviors being used while communicating to someone, it develops better-flowing conversations without any conflict being involved.
