PHASE II: RESEARCH PAPER (“Wine in California”)
Purpose: To learn about the profile of different wine regions and the grapes/wines that are produced within the region. In addition, students will research three (3) different wineries within the area.
Process:
Write a 2-3 page paper and answer the following questions in complete sentences:
· Description of the area (including location, geography, climate, and soils)
· Explain the history of the area
o Describe Grapes and wine styles of the region.
§ Identify wine(s) made from this grape.
§ Identify Personality traits: Traits of the grape itself
· Skin and Juice Colors, Aroma Compounds, Acidity levels, Thickness of skins, berry and cluster size (skin-to-juice ratio),
· Identify Performance factors: Growing conditions to include weather/climate, soils, irrigation requirements and any special needs (i.e. trellising).
§ Identify wine styles of the region
· Choose three wineries in the chosen region.
o Describe the wine produced by each of them in terms of profile, production techniques, alcohol content, average bottle price.
Data to be collected: Specifically address each item listed above in detail.
Written Page/Length Requirement: Phase II: Minimum of 3 double-spaced pages 12 pt times new roman per person
Worth: 100 points, Weight = 20% (See Written Evaluation Form)
Written Report Evaluation: includes the following:
1. Organization of material – neatness and order of presentation (10 points)
2. English writing skills – includes grammar and sentence structure (30 points)
3. Content – all information required must be provided. (60 points)
