For this assignment, you will be reading “Academic Achievement of Children in Same-and Different-Sex-Parented Families: A Population-Level Analysis of Linked Administrative Data From the Netherlands” by Jan Kabátek and Francisco Perales. Using this article, you will develop a research critique that explores the validity of the article on a number of fronts. Your critique will include the following:
- Brief overview of the article and its research goals
- Critique of the validity of the key measures (i.e., independent and dependent variables)
- Critique of the internal validity of the study
- Critique of the external validity of the study (i.e., generalizability)
- A conclusion summarizing your position on the validity of the study overall
For items 2-4, you are building an argument in which you using information from the paper and our class to support your conclusion. For example, if you believe that the measures are not valid indicators of the concepts, you need to provide information justifying your decision as well as alternative strategies the author could have used to validate her measures. In short, explain your rationale for every decision.
Limit your response to 2500 words (approximately 10 pages double-spaced). Though I do not have a minimum length, I would be surprised were you able to successfully address the task with fewer than 5 double-spaced pages.
You will be graded on the following dimensions:
Demonstrated understanding of relevant concepts
Soundness of logic in constructed arguments
Appropriate use of evidence (e.g., don’t cherry pick from the text)
Clarity and quality of writing
