Purpose
All experiments conducted by BIOL2496 Research Project students should have relevant and accountable project planning documentation. One way to provide basic, quality assurance documentation is to complete a project plan according to the general guidelines given below. Experiments or surveys should not start until the planning process has been satisfactorily completed. This process will assist in ensuring the relevance, integrity, accountability and high quality of our research.
This plan includes a higher-level review of general project scope and in that context, this pre-schedule process is intended to:
• Ensure efficient and effective use of available resources through adoption of sound research methodology and research design, and meticulous execution of research, to enable valid, defensible and publishable inferences and specified project outcomes to be achieved.
• Enable effective forward planning in allocation of required resources (labour, equipment).
• Provide efficiencies in terms of the subsequent writing of theses, reports and scientific publications.
• Provide relevant documentation to complement subsequent Human and/or Animal Ethics proposals (where applicable)
Planning is an integral part of the research process. Projects that are not adequately planned and prepared for will not generate good data, and so should not be resourced/undertaken.
Projects that are multi-disciplinary, and involve several (or more) research and support staff and/or institutions require more planning than those that involve only a single person or a few people within the same discipline. Project planning documentation can be used to ensure EVERYONE * within a project knows:
- Why the project is being undertaken;
- Who the project is being undertaken for;
- What the experimental/fieldwork timetable is;
- What a person’s role within a project is;
- When the experiment/fieldwork/lab data collection has to be completed by;
- When data has to be delivered;
- What expectations participants have with respect to authorship on research papers arising out of the project.
*, includes a single student and her/his supervisory team.

| Aim of the project. Each project should have clearly stated aims (what it is the project is trying to achieve) Why this project is important? COMPLETE SECTION THEN DELETE THIS BLUE TEXT text | |
| Background This section should summarise (3 pages) previous work in the area and the practical relevance of the work by reviewing and citing relevant literature and placing the work in context. This section must be done sufficiently well that it becomes the core content for the Introduction to the Thesis. COMPLETE SECTION THEN DELETE THIS BLUE TEXT text | |
| Methods It is important to carefully and clearly spell out in the plan how, when and which data will be collected and how these will be used in data analysis to meet project objectives. A GANNT chart highlighting project timelines should be included The description of experimental design should be as detailed as required – a concise (two paragraphs, or a few dot points) summary of what project will do may suffice. How much is written may depend on how well the project is understood at time of submission Ideally, this section should include description of the experimental design and statistical procedures to be used. Where the design and methods used are well understood (because they have been used before) this section should be prepared to the standard required by the Thesis. Where the methods have not been previously published, are new or are being modified they should be described as far as possible to enable discussion and identification of any issues.
