ZORA NEALE HURSTON

For your final paper, you may choose any author in your anthology who you would like to know more about. You will research that author’s life and experience and present that information in biographical format in your paper.(You may not use Maya Angelou since she will be the topic of your final exam.)

  • Pick an author you enjoy. This will take some of the pain out of research and will help you to write a more interesting paper. If you are interested, your audience will be, too.
  • You will mainly want to use factual information, but some cited opinions are appropriate.
  • You will want to organize the information you gather about the author; chronological order will probably work best.
  • Make your paper interesting by using your own voice.Your paper should not sound like an encyclopedia entry.

Next, choose two to three poems or one short story by your author.(You may use the works of literature found in your anthology, but if you don’t, be sure to include a works cited entry for the work).Apply the background you provided for the author to the work(s) of literature. In other words, answer the following question: How do you think this author’s background influenced the work(s) of literature?

  • The thesis of your paper will be your answer to the previous question.
  • This part of your paper should be research supported.
  • Remember that the speaker in a poem or the narrator in a short story is not the author of the work (though you may note that the author can relate to the speaker or narrator because of similar life experiences).
  • If you use poetry, make a common statement about the relationship of poet and poems in the works you use.Don’t relate each poem to the author in a totally different way.

You must have six sources cited in this paper, and this paper must be at least six pages in length.Try to vary your sources as much as possible.Your works cited page does not count as one of your pages, and your textbook does not count as one of your sources.
