For this assignment, you will select a research article from a refereed journal specifically
related to elementary mathematics education. The article must have been published within the
last 5 years. You will write a three to four page paper about the article in terms of its
implications for your own practice and overall teaching practices in Ontario. You will share
key points from the article with your classmates during class on either Oct 18th or 19th
(depending on your cohort). Assessment criteria for this assignment is found below and will be
discussed in class.
Success Criteria for an A-Range Mark for Research Assignment
Correct grammar, spelling and syntax are expected for all assignments at A-range level.
Assignment Protocolc
• Article is from a refereed journal and has been published within the last 5 years.
• Article is about mathematics education and relates to course content.
• Teacher candidate posts article reference on pepper BEFORE they begin assignment so
that others do not use the same article. They also check to make sure that others are not
choosign the same article. (In Articles for Assignment folder).
• Teacher candidate submits a link to the article and reflection within two weeks of the
sharing date.
• Paper is 12pt font using correct APA format.
• Assignment does not exceed 3-4 pages double spaced.
Success Criteria for Research Article Assignment
• The teacher candidate sucessfully highlights key points from article (very briefly, one
paragraph max).
• Teacher candidate is able to make sound connections between the findings from the
research and classroom practice.
• Teacher Candidate is able to identify meaningful implications that the research might
have on how we currently teach mathematics in Ontario.
• Teacher candidate provides relevant examples (From their own person experience)
wherever applicable, to support their insights and ideas.
• Teacher candidate is able to successfully assess how they might use the research to
support/change their own practice as a beginning teacher.
• Teacher candidate’s ideas are insightful, indicating a sound understanding of the
teaching/learning process.
• The paper is well organized and easy to follow.
• The paper is written with correct grammar/spelling and correct use of APA formatting.
Arricle Sharing in Breakout Groups
• Teacher candidate shares article with small group on designated day.
• Teacher candidate provides a brief overview of research (5 min max).
• Teacher candidate engages group in an activity and/or discussion related to the research
about the issues related to the article (participants do most of the discussion) (10 min)
• The discussion/sharing takes up the full 15 min.
Summary of Research Assignment
What: A 2-3 page paper that explores a research article related to math education published in the last 5 years
and an in-class sharing of article as per assignment success criteria. TC submits title of article in Articles for
Assignment folder BEFORE beginning assignment. They also check to make sure that their article has not
already been chosen by another TC.
Due date for article sharing: For cohorts 151 and 161 Oct 18, 2021 for cohorts 141 and 131 Oct 19, 2021.
Due date for analysis: Between Oct 19 and Nov 1st. for written Feedback. After Nov1 up to Jan 10 for verbal
feedback on request.
