Question 1:
Dr. Fauci has contacted you in your capacity as religion adviser for Muslim affairs with the following issue: The (Muslim) leader of a Muslim majority nation has come to the United States for heart surgery. He needs a valve of the heart replaced, otherwise he will die. The only workable replacement is that which will come from a pig’s heart (donor valves from humans, for whatever reason, do NOT work). Some Muslim activists, have advised Dr. Fauci that if the Qur’an prohibits something, then such prohibition is absolute regardless of circumstances. Dr. Fauci wants to know if the activists are correct, and if they are not, how to rebut them. He needs a detailed answer with reference to the words of some scholar, or verses of the Qur’an with explanations. Please feel free to add your analysis of the actual meaning of the verse in you feel this is appropriate, but do note that you must include specific page references from the Course Reader or assigned Course material.
