Religion Definition of Religion and Spirituality Question

Discussions are graded on: breadth (number of concepts and ideas discussed, two paragraphs posted per reading of a minimum of 2 readings), depth (application of ideas in reading to your own work, synthesis across readings or across course units), and extent of interaction with others in your discussion group. Questions follow to help start the discussion for this unit for the first person to post. Questions on religion, spirituality and intrinsic motivation. Answer 2 of 3 questions.

1) Describe the relationship between religion and spirituality as Pam Ebstyne-King et al. (2011) chapter define the terms. How is this similar to or different from the way you have defined or understood these terms? Where do the terms intersect (or what does religion and spirituality have in common) and where do they diverge (how are they different)?

2) Discuss the relationship between spirituality and thriving. Is this relationship how you expected it to be described by Ebstyne-King et al. (2011) and/or supported by research summarized? In what circumstances can religion and/or spirituality cause harm or damage to a youth’s developmental trajectory?

3) Read about factors that shape the experience of intrinsic motivation in the 2011 assigned book chapter. Define and describe one factor that shapes a person’s intrinsic motivation experience. How can you, as a youth professional, support a youth’s intrinsic motivation in a given subject matter area to promote positive development or success (as the youth defines it)?
