Use both Olympe de Gouge’s “Declaration of the Rights of Women” and Condorcet’s “Future Progress of the Human Mind” (the texts for Class Discussion 5) to answer the following questions: How did the Enlightenment and French Revolution together make it possible for people to imagine a future world very different from their own? What changes do De Gouge and Condorcet want to see in a future society that is different from their present French society in the 1780s-1790s? Why do they believe that the changes they propose are possible and even realistic? Who else (use your textbook and lecture notes!!) in the eighteenth century was publishing proposals for a better future, and how might De Gouge and Condorcet have been inspired by those other texts?
