Instructions for Reader Response Paper # 2

  • Paper should be a full 3 pages long (not counting cover sheet and APA Reference page), double-spaced, 12 pt. type. Cover sheet should contain only your name, title of your paper, and the date.
  • Do not place a heading of any type on first page of paper.
  • Select any short story, except one you have already written about. You may choose more than one story to compare and contrast.
  • Before you begin writing, decide on a “thesis” for your paper: say something about the story that you can support and “prove” with quotes from the story, and from two outside sources besides the story. Choose a theme that is relevant to today’s issues. For example, your thesis could be: “It is not easy to achieve the so-called “American Dream” whether you are a native-born American (such as Sammy) or a recent immigrant (like the narrator in “Volar”).OR
  • Next, make an informal cloud diagram or outline; jot down your “thesis” and surround it with 3 or 4 statements that support it. Back up the statements with quotes from story or your article.
  • Next, go to the SANJAC database and look up information on the author. Look for one or two details about the author’s biography that support or connect with your thesis. Do not include random information. Be sure to quote this information correctly.
  • In the first paragraph, explain why you selected the story and clearly explain your “thesis”…the idea you will prove or support.Use personal examples or experiences, quotes from story and/or quotes from article.
  • In the second paragraph, discuss the author’s life. Focus on biographical details that might support your thesis, or connect with the story. Do not simply list random biographical details. An article on the author can be one of your two sources. Be sure to quote any sources, using APA parenthetical citation.
  • In the third paragraph, discuss how the author uses sense imagery and figurative language; try to relate these examples to your thesis. You should be able to find a minimum of four examples. Symbols may be used but cannot substitute for figurative language.
  • In the following two to three good paragraphs, support your thesis, using specific lines and examples from the story, quotes from your articles, and examples from your personal experience or observations.
  • In your concluding paragraph, summarize your thesis. Mention anything that you learned from the story or from your research for the paper.
  • On your References page, list the text and your articles. Use APA for your References page.

“ Mothers are(are not) crucial to a young woman’s search for her identity.”

OR

“Sammy in “A&P” and the Narrator in “Araby” represent the artist who fights for beauty and against against social conformity.”

OR

“The Yellow Wallpaper is an example of Feminist Theory.”

You can also discuss women’s rights, feminism, or male-female relationships. Please do not use the same thesis you used for Reader Response paper # 1. Once you establish your thesis you then must find quotes in the story and in two articles from the SAN JAC databases to support it. Do not use articles from Google or the internet!
