Read the “Genomewide Association Study of Severe COVID-19 with Respiratory Failure”. Then concisely answer the following questions.

  1. In one sentence, in your own words, what was the main purpose of this study?
  2. What are the parameters for the people chosen as the controls? i.e. Who was in the control group?
  3. Without the restriction of time, what would be a better control group or how could it be improved?
  4. How many SNPs were genotyped?
  5. The p-value cutoff that’s considered significant is much higher for this type of study than most studies. What was it? Why do you think it is set so high? (hint: think about how many SNPs are genotyped)
  6. Why do you think the authors were so sure that the significant SNPs on chromosome 9 indicated that the ABO gene was involved, while for chromosome 3 they said it could be any of several different genes?
  7. Look up one of the genes on chromosome 3 that was implicated in severe COVID-19 response. In your own words, what is the function of this gene? Has it been implicated in any other phenotypes or disorders – if so, which?
