Reading Literature Itself Assignments:
- Read Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and the short biography of Lorraine Hansberry (1583-1645).
This discussion will be completed in two parts and will give you an opportunity to reflect upon this week’s content and to interact with your classmates.
- Part 1 – Post your initial response to the discussion questions by Wednesday at 11:59 pm
- Part 2 – Post substantive feedback to 1 classmate by Saturday at 11:59 pm
Part 1: This week you need to post your paper for a review by another student as well as do your part to review another student’s paper.
- Post a rough draft of your paper on our discussion board as early in the week as you can to receive feedback from your peers.
- The file name should follow this format: JaneSmithM4ContrastPaper25Oct2014.docx
- When you post your paper, add a note like this: Would someone please review my paper? I especially need help with my commas.
Part 2:
- Review another student’s paper.
- USE THE NEW COMMENT AND TRACK CHANGES FEATURES IN WORD to mark up and comment on specific parts of the other student’s paper. This means you need to open the other student’s file, and make your comments and mark corrections in it. If you have never used these two features of Word before, view this very short and clear explanation of how to do both in your review paper: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByISQeGDAHo
- Use track changes: Make at least 4 track changes markings in the paper you are reviewing. Turn Track Changes on in the Review tab of Microsoft Word. Then correct a word by deleting, like thas this so that you are helping improve the wording of the paper you are reviewing. I take 33% off your grade for not using this feature in your review.
- Use comment balloons: Make at least 8 comments in the New Comment balloons feature under the Review tab in MS Word. Use the new comment balloon to point out when a running header is missing or an introduction paragraph is good and has all four steps with an italicized thesis statement.
- Look if the quotes are handled right and support the topic sentence of the paragraphs they appear in. Is the thesis developed and alluded to throughout the essay?
- Are the Works Cited in perfect MLA form? Offer suggestions for how a sentence might be better worded, or note when a point in the essay isn’t clear to you as a reader. Point out strong verbs. I take off 33% for not having 8 comment boxes in your review.
- Name the file carefully when saving your review: Save your review of the other student’s paper (say his name is Thomas Rivera and yours is Jane Smith) with a title like this: JaneSmithReviewOfThomasRiveraM4Paper29Nov2014.doc. Be sure to add a note to the message box when you post your review, summarizing how you think the other student is doing on the project.
- Clean your own paper from Track Changes and Comment Balloons before submitting it for a grade: When you open your own paper that another student has critiqued, you will use the Accept and Reject changes features in the Review tab to go through your paper and clean out all those markings and balloons. When you turn your paper in for a grade, I shouldn’t see any Comment boxes or red Track Changes markings.
