Answer the following question:

1.  Summarize what you understand context is. What are three important parts of understanding the rhetorical context of something as explained by the author? (Explain in your own words, please).

2.  Google the following information (look for images and short descriptions about…):

  • Homer and his epic poem “The Odyssey”
  • Homer Simpson and his famous words “DOH!”

(this will give you a little context on the differences between these two Homers and help you understand the next part of the reading)

3.  Read and annotate the last paragraph on page 49 and continue to the end.

4.  Answer the following questions:

  • The ad that the writer discusses in the article is about the importance of arts education.  Are the arts (music, theatre, dance, painting, drawing, etc.) taught in elementary, middle or high school in your country?  What kinds of exposure do children and youth have to arts in your country?

  • The ad discussed in the article can no longer be found on the internet, so you have to rely on the description by the author.  Can you imagine the ad as it is described by the author? Summarize what you understand the author is trying to convince you of by using this example of the Homer psa.  What is clear for you and what is confusing? (note there are 2 major parts of this question).

Paideia, Chapter 2

Read and annotate pages 18-29. Then answer the following questions:

1.  After reading both assignments, summarize what you understand a Rhetorical Analysis is.  This should be a very thorough explanation.

2.  Look at the sample Rhetorical Analysis on ages 27-29. Of all of the elements you have read about (audience, exigence, author, purpose, ethos, pathos, logos, etc) which elements of the analysis did this writer focus on?  Mark which parts of the paper is DESCRIPTION and which is ANALYSIS?  Where does the author say whether he/she thinks the photo is EFFECTIVE or INEFFECTIVE in convincing his/her audience of something?.
