Wk 6 – Vocabulary Activities Presentation

Assignment Content

  1. Imagine you have been tasked with teaching social studies OR science vocabulary activities to a small group of students that includes an English learner, a student with ADHD, and a student with dyslexia.
Choose a grade level and subject area and create before reading, during reading, and after reading vocabulary development activities appropriate for this small group. Include instructional strategies you would use for each learner – English learner, a student with ADHD, and a student with dyslexia.
Create an 8-10 slide presentation including the following:

    • Grade level
    • ELA vocabulary standard(s) for the selected grade level – including the coding and wording of the vocabulary standard(s)
    • Social studies or science content area standard(s) for the selected grade level – include the coding and wording of the social studies or science standards
    • Social studies or science text used as the basis of the vocabulary activities (use a different text from the week 5 team assignment)
    • 5-10 focus vocabulary words from the text you selected that align with the vocabulary skills in the standards
    • Before reading, during reading, and after reading vocabulary activities for each learner – English learner, a student with ADHD, and a student with dyslexia NOTE: Review the vocabulary strategies from the course readings for week 6. Simply copying definitions and writing sentences is not best practice for vocabulary instruction.
    • Include one interactive website students could use after completing the before, during, and after reading vocabulary activities to practice vocabulary along with a description of the vocabulary activities students would complete at the website.

Base your before, during, and after vocabulary activities on the six principles of vocabulary instruction:

    • Establish goals
    • Build on what students know
    • Build a depth and breadth of meaning
    • Create an interest in words
    • Relate words to students’ lives
    • Promote independent word learning

Include a title page, headings, in-text citations, and a reference page in APA format citing the social studies or science text students will read along with citing the course readings and professional education resources from the University’s library database rather than Google searches.Resources
