My Disability is Visual Impairment
1. The use of AT systems is to focus on the skills of the pwd/user and provide assistive devices that augment/replace functional limitations. The goal of AT is to increase functional independence for pwd. The focus is on the remaining functioning rather than the existing lost function.
Instructions: Based on the disability that you selected for your AT Resource book, you will need to identify how the functional limitation(s) can effect a person’s ability to perform Activities of Daily Living ADL – Activities of Daily Living (bathing, getting around inside, dressing, eating, etc.) provide resources via the internet that can assist a person in performing at least two ADLs. Provide the URL addresses (Internet Addresses) to support your response.
2. Please read the brief article, “Driving Home the Point on Accessibility” (click on the link below or copy and paste the link into a new tab/window). In your discussion, present your point of view on the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice’s decision regarding electronic book readers, colleges/universities, and students with disabilities. Support your opinion with information about accessibility and accommodation. Does this decision hinder the use of innovative technology on college campuses? In this webcast, Presley talks about the world of assistive technology and walks us through a range of assistive technology options. He shares some of the strategies involved in conducting an assessment as well as in choosing the right assistive technology tool for the learner. Ike also provides guidance regarding how often learners should be reassessed and resources for staying current with assistive technologies.
