SOC-8-40317-F21Chapter 3 Discussion: I Know You Are but What Am I?

Learning Goal: Apply an understanding of social control and labeling theory to our lived experiences.

Response Reflection:

For this week’s discussion, students should share a time in their life when they received a “deviant label” (can be an incident where you actually broke a social norm OR an incident where you were falsely accused).

Please share:

1) What norm did you break or were accused of breaking?

2) What was the label you received?

3) How did you feel about receiving this label?

4) Why in our society (or in that particular setting) is that label deviant (think about cultural values or beliefs here)?

5) Who were the labelers/social control agents?

6) Did you try to challenge the label? If yes, in what way? If no, why do you think that is?

7) Was there any punishment other than the application of the negative label? Did the label inhibit your access (or could it have inhibited your access) to any resources/privileges/activities?

Response Activity:

1) Think of an example where the meaning of an attitude, behavior or characteristic (ABCs of deviance!) has changed over time. This could be an attitude, behavior or characteristic that used to be viewed negatively but now is seen (or is starting to be seen) as neutral or even positive. Conversely, you could also select an attitude, behavior, or characteristic that was previously viewed as neutral or even positive but now is (or is starting to be) evaluated negatively.

2) Upload or link to any artifacts (images, websites, songs, films, advertisements, documents) that you feel represents the attitude, behavior or characteristic before and after this change.
