Answer the following questions.
- Differentiate between bacterial infection and bacterial intoxication.
- Discuss the importance of E. coli as part of our intestinal flora.
- 3.Describe three (3) different types of gastrointestinal diseases caused by bacteria. Be sure to give the name of the specific organism that causes each, describe some common signs and symptoms and discuss treatment for each disease:
- Define meningitis. Compare and contrast between bacterial and viral meningitis including treatment for each.
- What is a prion? Describe the impact prions have on the human brain and discuss two prion-associated diseases in humans:
- What is a vector-borne (vector transmitted) disease? Give an example of a vector borne disease and the vector responsible for causing it
Module 6 Homework Hints
This week you are studying gastrointestinal, nervous, and circulatory/lymphatic Systems. All answers should be directed towards these systems. If the question asks for gastrointestinal diseases, do not talk about nervous system diseases. If there is a link between the various systems, go ahead and mention it but concentrate on the system which the question is asking about.
1. Bacterial Infection and Bacterial Intoxication should be related to GASTROINTESTINAL infections. They are discussed in Chapter 24. Infection of the GI tract, not respiratory, circulatory or nervous.
2. Escherichia coli can be a beneficial or a harmful organism. Discuss both. There is information on pages 151/161, and 1049 (Chapter 24). Be very cautious of answers from Course Hero or other web material. The answer is incorrect and I have seen it many many times. If it isn’t cited it is plagiarism. If it is, you still get points off because E. coli is not a tank.
3. DESCRIBE 3 different GI diseases caused by BACTERIA. Specific organism is Genus species. Include signs and symptoms for each disease.
4. Define meningitis. This is a nervous system disease so it is discussed in Chapter 26. This is a COMPARE and CONTRAST. This isn’t just a list. Tell me how they are similar and how they are different. DISCUSS not list.
5. We have seen this term before. PRION. It is discussed in Chapter 26 as it affects the nervous system. In microbiology, this is referring to an acellular particle not a bird on an island (some gave this definition in a previous homework assignment).
6. We just had a simillar question on the topic of vector-borne disease so you should know what to put here. Information can be found on pages 713-716, and 244.
