Format for Assignment:
· Include page numbers for your
document.
· Quotations may be single or
double-spaced but your analyses and short paper must be double-spaced.
· Include the author’s full name, the
title of the text, and the page number
(or line number for poems) of the
quotation for EACH quotation.
· Sample quotation analyses with
correct formatting are available in Course Information > Exams and Papers.
Assignment: This assignment has two parts.
1.
Quotation analyses (10 quotations): Throughout the semester, you will
gather your favorite excerpts from the course readings. Choose 10 excerpts from course materials (this
includes novels, short stories, poems, song lyrics, websites, articles, etc.),
and then closely analyze each one in a 3-4 sentence (more if needed) discussion
of the significance of each
quotation. For each, identify the author, title of the text, and page number,
and provide some brief context for the quotation. Then, analyze the
significance of the quotation by close reading it, examining the language
and imagery, and connecting it to course concepts (if relevant). In
a sense, you are explaining how the excerpt functions in the text and
justifying why you chose it as an important passage.
2.
Short response paper
(1-2 pages): Explore
the connections among your excerpts and discuss why you chose the quotations
you did. This short paper is not a formal essay with a thesis, but rather a
response to your choice of quotations. It is intended to be a thoughtful,
engaged response and may include personal reactions, as long as you analyze
those impressions. In short, think about WHY you chose the quotes you did and
write a paper thoughtfully explaining this process and the connections.
