Queens University of Charlotte Organizational Communication Questionnaire

Stanley Deetz and several other theorists of the critical and postmodern perspectives of organizational culture assert that organizations are increasingly engaging in the “corporate colonization of the life-world,” in which the interests of corporations frame all aspects of daily life.

1.In what ways do the power structures and ideologies embedded in today’s organizational world create taken for granted forms of oppression or hegemonic practices?

2.How do the ways we communicate in our organizations reveal important sources of power and dominant ideologies? Consider specific examples of the ways we talk (e.g., jargon, metaphors, stories), our performances and rituals (e.g., holidays parties), our artifacts (e.g. office space), etc.

3.In what ways do you and others willingly adopt and enforce the legitimate power of these structures and ideologies (manufactured consent)?

4.In what ways, if any, do you and others resist these practices and the dominant corporate or institutional ideologies embedded in them? (If you cannot think of an instance of resistance, reflect on why you do not or cannot engage in practices of resistance.)
