This assignment focuses on content area words. ESL students (and many native speakers) tend to have particular difficulty with them.
This assignment has 3 parts:
Part 1:
- Choose a textbook. This can be any textbook, it doesn’t have to be for your current or future students.
- Give a citation for the textbook and page numbers used for this assignment. (If you need assistance with citing references in APA format, here’s a link: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html (Links to an external site.)
- Check your citation – sometimes students give me just the title of the text, or the title and author. I’m looking for an actual APA style citation that includes page numbers.
- Select at least 6 words that are content specific to the chapter. List them and define them (because I might need the background info 🙂
Part 2:
Think about teaching these words to students, and answer these 5 questions in at least a couple sentences for each one:
(pages 258-263 may be helpful to review and refer to as you answer these, particularly p. 259)
- How will you relate the “new” to the known?
- How will you offer repetitions of the new words in meaningful contexts?
- How will you provide opportunities for deeper processing of word meaning of this set of words?
- How will you engage students in using these newly learned words?
- What strategies will you offer students to use independently and understand new word sets such as these in the future? (2-3 ideas) (Note – so not further work on the set of words you were taking about in 1-4, but new sets they will encounter in the future)
Part 3:
Discuss how this vocabulary exercise and the activities above (#1-5) apply to English learners. Is their experience the same as native speakers? Why or why not? Would you do the same things for both groups? Why or why not? (minimum 4 sentences)
