There are many potential opportunities you could engage in or ways that currently exhibit leadership such as; Sports, Cross-cultural experience, social groups, Internships, Volunteering, Student government and Organizations, Passion projects, any time you worked in a team, etc. (Flavin, 2019). These opportunities can be conducted formally or informally, in various settings within any community, including the small-town Tuba City where I am originally from.
The small town I am from is big on sports, volunteering, and social festivities. This is how leaderships opportunities were taken by leaders to engage with the community. The opportunity I am taking on June 1st is an internship with Inter Tribal Council of Arizona.
The Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona was established in 1952 to provide a united voice for tribal governments located in the State of Arizona to address common issues of concerns. On July 9, 1975, the council established a private, non-profit corporation, Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. (ITCA), under the laws of the State of Arizona to promote Indian self-reliance through public policy development. ITCA provides an independent capacity to obtain, analyze and disseminate information vital to Indian community self-development (ITCA, 2021).
ITCA operates more than 30 projects and employs a staff of 70 to provide on-going technical assistance and training to tribal governments in program planning and development, research and data collection, resource development, management and evaluation. In addition, the staff of ITCA organizes and conducts seminars, workshops, conferences and public hearings to facilitate participation of tribal leaders in the formulation of public policy at all levels. The goal of ITCA and its commitment to the member tribes is to ensure the self-determination of Indian tribal governments through their participation in the development of the policies and programs which affect their lives (ITCA, 2021).
As a new member of ITCA, I will be learning ways of exhibiting, acknowledging, addressing and assessing cultural differences among 21 tribal Nations in the State of Arizona. Although they are Native Americans but different tribes, their cultures are very different ITCA tries to work with all tribes committing to unity on issues like health, environment, education, culture, community, etc.
Example of a discussion or project I was assigned to is to write about “Chinese seeds from the mail” I haven’t gotten the full detail of what I am supposed to write about but to my understanding I am to research Chinese medicine and the seeds that were sent out by mail. We have only heard the first, bad and only impression of these seeds through media. I will be trying to explain how the Chinese medicine and even what the seeds obtain maybe beneficial. This also deals with cultural differences. This is one of my first projects I was assigned to and I am looking forward to doing more research and writing on other topics.
