Discussion: Object Recognition and the Development of Expertise

Main Discussion

Expertise can be considered the ability to recognize things more precisely or more quickly than others. There is a theory popularized by Malcolm Gladwell that such expertise requires 10,000 hours of experience. Others have argued against this position. We are all experts at recognizing something. Maybe it is a type of tree or bird calls or breeds of dogs. Maybe it is the faces of family and loved ones. In this two-part discussion, you will first discuss how your visual system perceives an object that is familiar to you and how you recognize that object. Then, you will take a position on the idea that 10,000 hours of practice are required to become an expert at recognition.

To Prepare:

  • Review Chapter 3, “Visual Perception”; Chapter 4, “Recognizing Objects”; and the Learning Resources about expertise (Gladwell, 2019; Nuwer, 2014).
  • Consider an object that you are familiar with (person, pet, object around your home or office) and ways to describe the object to someone who has never seen it.
  • Next, consider a topic in the area of your expertise.
  • Post
  • A 2-paragraph summary that describes how you recognize something with which you are familiar. Describe the object without saying what it is and how these individual components are reassembled into the whole. Then, based on the readings this week, explain in your own words how sensory systems identify the individual components of the object. Finally, reveal the object.
  • In addition, post a paragraph explaining your position on the validity of the 10,000 hours theory. Cite the Learning Resources and include any experiences related to your expertise.
  • Be sure to use at least 2-4 key terms (bolded words) from this week’s textbook readings in your answers.

Please be sure to read the 2 links posted above and write a paragraph on your stance of the 10,000 hour to be an expert. We use the book titled “Cognition Exploring the of the Mind” by Daniel Reisberg and we must use 2-4 key words from our readings this week which are chapter 3 and 4. Please be sure to use in-text citation to cite with APA 7 any information used from any other source.

Finally at the end please provide a reference list of all references used in writing of paper.
