What you need to do:

  • Recruit 2 participants: both must be over 21 years old (they can be friends, family members or acquaintances who are not currently enrolled in PSY107).
  • You need to test your participants separately; Participant 1 first, then Participant 2.
  • Familiarise yourself with how to administer the memory test.
  • It may help to have a practice session with a non-participant friend or family member.

Preparation:

  • Print the following Word files:
    • 2a. Consent form (two copies; one for each participant)
    • 2b. Positive condition
    • 2c. Neutral condition
  • Have a stopwatch/timer handy to time your participants.
  • Administer the memory test using the printed files, with one participant doing the positive condition and the other doing the neutral condition.

Participant 1 (Positive condition)

Participant 2 (Neutral condition)

  • Seat your participant and provide a pen (remember to test them separately).
  • Hand the consent form to your participant and allow your participant to complete it.
  • Hand the memory test sheets to your participant and get them to read the instructions; when the participant appears ready, check to see if the participant has any questions before starting the memory test.
  • Get your stopwatch/timer ready as the participant is given 2 minutes to study the word list.
  • Stop the participant when the time is up and get the participant to turn to the response sheet.
  • Get your stopwatch/timer ready as the participant is given 2 minutes to complete the response sheet.
  • Stop the participant when the time is up and collect the sheets. Give a score of 1 for each correctly recalled word.
  • Thank your participant for his/her time AND debrief* your participant by explaining what the experiment was about and what you expect to find.

*Read the TMA instructions so that you have a good understanding of the research question and the experimental rationale to help you explain the study to your participant.
