Project: To Determine if direct infusion (i.e., intravenous or intragastric) of water or nutrients can motivate behavior in hungry or thirsty laboratory animals, respectively. The motivational condition generally described as “thirst” can be induced by water deprivation, salt loading (e.g., hypertonic saline administration), or other comparable means, and the condition generally described “hunger” would usually be induced by food deprivation. The question is whether direct administration (i.e., substance administration that does not pass through the mouth and therefore lacks the usually hydrating and taste properties) of water or nutrients can reinforce or maintain reinforce behavior. This project is intended to determine if a primary drive like “thirst” or “hunger” can motivation goal-directed behavior aimed at terminating the drive.
Assignment: Review two (or more) research papers addressing this topic (either feeding or drinking) and formulate your own conclusion based on the data you’ve reviewed. The two research reports and YOUR overall conclusion based on the extant data should be summarized in about one single-spaced typed page for each paper (and yes, you can double-side your submissions). The main components of your project consists of:
- a brief summary of the research report,
- a short critique of the study, and
- the argument(s) and substantiating evidence upon which you base your conclusion.
Additional details were presented (and discussed) several times in class. I will try to summarize this material in an update to this assignment.
